Hemp History Week Update!

Hemp History Week Update!

This past week was the 4th Annual Hemp History Week! Hemp History Week is a nation-wide educational campaign that seeks to renew strong support for hemp farming in the U.S. while also raising awareness about the benefits of hemp products. The week included country-wide grass-roots events, nationwide retail promotions, a day of action, and even a national restaurant program. Domestic retail sales of hemp food and body care products reached $156 million last year, and the Hemp Industries Association estimates that all hemp products sales, including clothing, auto parts, and building materials, totaled at least $500 million. Many companies hope that one day they will no longer have to import this versatile and sustainable crop from Canada and the U.K, but be able to plant and harvest it right here on American soil.

On June 4th this year, the State Senate of California unanimously passed a bill that would set up guidelines and provisions that would allow farmers to grow industrial hemp. The bill is now heading to the state Assembly, but cannot take effect until production of industrial hemp is given the O.K under federal law. Patrick Goggin, the California legal counsel for the industry group “Vote Hemp” said, “The prospects for SB 566 are very good. Unlike past industrial hemp bills, this session’s version does not go into effect until it is authorized by federal law. We feel confident that California will finally have an industrial hemp law later this year ensuring that California farmers are ready and able to cultivate hemp upon federal approval”.

For Hemp Authority, we are very happy to make it through our first Hemp History Week in on piece! By far this has been the best week for us since we started out, and we hope it is a sign of things to come. The increase in sales really shows how much people care to learn about hemp, and hopefully with these new advances in the political front, it will come to light for more people. Every day the voice for hemp gets stronger, and now is the time to make your voice heard!
